Shrugs (Aka, Those Cropped Sweaters That Only Cover Your Arms)

March 28, 2024

Being fully honest, I could not figure out what these were called for the life of me. I googled "sweater with no shirt" and variations until I decided to type in my question and lo and behold someone on Reddit was wondering the exact same thing and I figured out they are allegedly called "shrugs." However, I also got results by searching "arm warmer sweater" and someone suggested bolero but that is a different thing.

To be clear, I don't necessarily dislike this trend; I just think this is going to be regarded with the same sense of shame that is sparked when you see what you were wearing during your quarantine "alt" Shein egirl phase (proudly did not have one, however I did own shameful thigh highs and I did wear some terrible outfits my freshman year.) Maybe a better comparison would be like, galaxy leggings, or that one choker in 2016.

You know the one....

I regrettably bought one off Amazon when I was like 13 but I never wore it because it looked dumb.

Anyway, I am not claiming to be a fashion expert nor do I have any sense of style, but I am in fact entitled to my opinion and my opinion is BOOOOO THIS SUUUUCKS!!

This is what I'm talking about if you have been fortunate enough to not see one yourself yet:

This isn't to say the models here look completely terrible, first woman is absolutely serving, however I am not rating her body or her tank top or her skirt I am rating her silly looking and pathetic excuse for a sweater. Shrugs are just SILLY. Like I just see these and I don't think "OOOOH CUNTCUNTCUNTCUNT" I think "that looks very very silly."

They're most commonly crocheted or some kind of knit based on what I've seen on Instagram however I'm obviously not gonna put random people's outfits on my shitty little blog and go "LOOK HOW MUCH THIS SUCKS!!"

To be fully honest even though I think it is called a shrug I cannot for the life of me find images of what I mean online when I search that. I promise I am not making this up this is in fact a microtrend my right hand to God. I have seen it marketed as being Y2K sometimes and I just silently wither away and sob.

I was not too concerned with the existence of shrugs until I was sweater shopping at Hot Topic a month or two ago and I was like aww this sweater is so cute because I LOOOVE SWEATERS and I in fact even love cropped sweaters and then I tried it on and I was like "why are my tits out lol." Foolishly, I believed it was only a cropped sweater. I have been personally victimized by these existing and I will NOT stand for it. The last thing I'm trying to do is emphasize my breasts or lack thereof to the general public.

This is not the exact sweater, the one I tried had way less on the front and was a different material and color, but ohhhhh Hot Topic.. you deserve your own blog post......

In conclusion: this is not for me and I blame Zara for its prevalence. Maybe everyone that I see on Insta just sucks at styling them. (Opinion may be subject to change if I end up trying one on and I actually slay in it. Will amend this if that day ever comes.)
